NZG&H #165 is on sale now!

Hey team,

NZG&H #165 goes on sale today with a good variety of articles to keep you occupied leading up to the roar!

On that note, make sure to check out Brad Ramsay's excellent article on hunting sika with his Grandad during last years roar!

Also in this issue Craig Maylam continues his Reloading 101 series and in this article looks at case trimming, Frazer Winskill tests out a couple of leading edge optics from Sig Sauer, and Phil Day provides useful insights when it comes to researching and purchasing your fly camping equipment.

There are also a couple of great features discussing cartridges such as rising star, the 6.5 Creedmore and the varmint king, the .220 Swift!

The roar is almost upon us and if you’re anything like me you begin the countdown to the next one as soon as the last one winds up.

On the hunter’s calendar, the rut or roar is easily the most exciting and anticipated time of the year. Plans are hatched, ballots are entered, leave is booked (from both work and home!), and maps and Google Earth are poured over.

It is a time to check over our rifles, packs and gear and make sure everything is ready to roll. It is also a time to take stock of our own safety measures, both with getting around on the hill and our firearm handling. Your life and those of the others around you should be your highest priority and at no point should you jeopardise this for the sake of an animal.

On this note, make sure you check out the Mountain Safety Council’s Roar 2018 update on page 10 of this issue which addresses some important themes surrounding the roar.

“Frontier – the Battle for the North Island”
Peter Maxwell’s controversial book about the New Zealand War campaigns of the 1860s tells a story few New Zealanders really understand, and has now been reprinted a third time. “Frontier” threads these complex events into their direct chronological sequence, traces the campaigns on the ground, and unlike the politically correct accounts approved off by the academics, treats both Maori and European fighting men with respect.
The latest 384 page revised edition is on sale now, and contains additional maps and illustrations not found in the two earlier editions.

Kaimanawa Ranges: Thunderbolt Stream

31st March – 2nd April 2017 At last! Work was out of the way, there was a clear weather window (well, for the first couple of days anyway...) and I was finally able to head down to the Southern Kaimanawas for a jaunt over to Thunderbolt Stream. After having to postpone this trip a couple of times, it was third time lucky and I couldn’t wait ... read more

Kaweka Ranges: Studholme, Kiwi Saddle & Kiwi Mouth

27th – 30th January 2017 Even the best laid plans can fall though and unfortunately that is what happened with our Thunderbolt/Rangitikei trip. Due to circumstances beyond my control, our flight into the Thunderbolt Tops had to be cancelled! I was pretty gutted as it was an opportunity for Scotty and Phill to come along for a fly-in hunt. S... read more

Kaweka Ranges: Back Ridge

4th – 7th November 2016 One of the main attractions for me when I’m chasing sika is the exploration of the country they live in, Nothing beats it. since I first began hunting sika, I have always wanted to cover as much of the Kaimanawas and Kawekas as possible and visiting every established public hut and bivvy is part of this attraction. ... read more

Savage Model 16 Lightweight Hunter in 7mm-08

Nik reviews Savage Arms’ latest hunting rifle... Lightweight rifles are all the rage these days – most hunters are looking at ways to reduce the amount of weight they carry. A kilo here or there can make a measurable difference to how your body copes on an extended trip, or even a day hunt. When it comes to rifle weight this kilo can equa... read more

Kaweka Ranges: Te Pukeohikarua, Harkness & Tussock Huts

6th – 9th September 2015 Over the last five issues of NZG&H we have hunted and traversed some of the most iconic sika hunting areas in the Kaimanawa and Kaweka Forest Parks, including the Southern Kaimanawa Access Poled Route, Ruatea (Jap Creek) Stream, Middle Hill, Ballard & Makino Huts, Waipakihi Hut, and Oamaru, Tussock & Boyd H... read more

Kaimanawa & Kaweka Ranges: Oamaru, Tussock and Boyd Hut

22nd – 25th July 2015 I have to admit to being pretty excited when the time came to head away for this trip. The Oamaru has special meaning to me, it’s where my sika-hunting career really began and each time I walk up the steps to the hut I am reminded of some of my most memorable trips. To sweeten the deal, I decided to head further in a... read more
